Time is critical with a knocked-out tooth — but don’t panic. Call South Gaston immediately and we’ll guide you step-by-step over the phone while getting your child seen as fast as possible. We handle tooth injuries and fractures every day with calm, experienced hands.
A sudden, intense toothache can signal infection or a deeper problem that won’t go away on its own. At South Gaston, we prioritize children in pain and work to get them comfortable and treated quickly — no long waits, no dismissing their discomfort.
Swelling in a child’s mouth can indicate an abscess or infection that needs prompt attention. South Gaston’s team will evaluate, diagnose, and treat quickly — and explain everything to you clearly so you understand exactly what’s happening with your child’s health.

Many children feel nervous, fearful, or overwhelmed during dental visits. Some are simply too young to sit comfortably through treatment. Others may need more extensive care.
We offer three levels of sedation, depending on your child’s needs.
1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (not the root). Do not scrub it.
2. Gently rinse with water if dirty. Do not dry it.
3. Keep it moist — in milk, saline, or between cheek and gum (if your child is old enough).
4. Call us immediately and head to our office. Time is critical.
1. Rinse your child’s mouth gently with warm water.
2. Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling.
3. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums or tooth.
4. Call our office right away. Infections can worsen quickly in children.
1. Save any broken pieces if possible and rinse with warm water.
2. Apply gauze to any bleeding areas for 10 minutes.
3. Call South Gaston. We’ll assess whether it’s urgent and guide next steps.

We want you prepared and confident, even in stressful moments. Here’s what parents ask us most about pediatric dental emergencies.
We make every effort to see emergency cases the same day, often within hours of your call. When you call our office, let the front desk know it’s an emergency and describe what’s happening — we’ll get you in as fast as possible.
Yes — but baby teeth are typically not re-implanted, as it can affect the developing permanent tooth. That said, you should still call us right away. We’ll examine your child to make sure there’s no underlying injury to the gum or jaw and give you guidance on what to expect next.
For dental emergencies — toothaches, broken teeth, knocked-out teeth, or mouth injuries without heavy bleeding — call our office first. We’re equipped to handle pediatric dental trauma and can often see your child faster than an ER. If there is significant bleeding that won’t stop, a head injury, or signs of a broken jaw, go to the emergency room immediately.
Absolutely. Working with anxious children is something our entire team is trained and experienced in. We use calm communication, gentle techniques, and a child-friendly approach even in urgent situations. Your child’s comfort is always part of the care.
Most dental insurance plans include coverage for emergency visits. Call our office and we’ll help verify your benefits before or during your visit so there are no financial surprises on top of an already stressful day.
Please call our office number at any time — our voicemail provides guidance for after-hours emergencies, including when to seek immediate care. We monitor urgent situations and do our best to connect with families in need as quickly as possible.
